Examining Codes of Ethics

NAEYC Code of Ethics
I. 1.3 - To recognize and respect the uniqueness and the potential of each child.
I love how this code was stated, the uniqueness of the child.  This is a reminder that every child is special and unique in their own way, and that I need to encourage that.

I. 1.4- To appreciate the special vulnerability of children.

This reminds me to"go with the flow."  It is great to make lesson plans, but I need to remember that I need to follow the children's' interests.  Being flexible allows the students to have a certain amount of vulnerability in their daily activities.
 DEC Code of Ethics
7. We shall be responsible for protecting the confidentiality of the children and families we serve by protecting all forms of verbal, written, and electronic communication.

I think as teachers we want our classroom  to feel like our extended family, and we can have occasional slips of information of someone that hurt someone else, or any other information.  This is a reminder to myself and my co-workers that each child's information is confidential and not for anyone else.

  1. I totally agree that the classroom should feel like an extended family, children are excited to come to a place they are comfortable with and feel secure.

  2. I like the codes you chose. I too think it is very important to remember that when it comes to confidentiality we are all guilty of letting something slip and it is important to watch that. I too picked 1.4 to appreciate the vulnerability of kids and how they depend on us.

  3. Jessica, I totally agree with you that 'to go with the flow' is not always or does not always work on all children all the time. There has to be a certain extent of flexibility without losing the structure of instruction. Considering the kids' interests make them feel important and appreciated.

  4. Jessica, I like the codes that you chose. I do agree that children's information is not for everyone else. As you may know I am a at home child care provider and although the children that I care for are family I still am mindful about what I share. I feel that my job is to share the information with the parent and then its up to the parent if her or she decides to share with the rest of family. I actually learned the importance of this code after it was brought to my attention that somethings pertaining to the child I care for should be kept private. Thank you for sharing your views. I think I'm going to adapt your concept of going with the flow....
